Default Buying a civic si soon, any advice?

Hi guys, so I'm buying a honda civic si soon, this is my first car that I'll be buying with my own money, not sure if I want to get an older one or a newer one. I'm just worried that if I get an older one, like an 02 or something, something will happen to it and I'll end up having to overhaul the engine. But if I get a newer one (like an 09) I can drive confidently, but that 300 dollar a month payment is going to be very annoying and I'll have little extra money after that. Any advice that anyone would like to give me?
