2003 Honda CR-V with OBD code P0845 and P042
 

In Dec my 03 CRV got P0845 and P0420 code for the first time. Its the first time I seen an engine light on. I had 157K miles in it.

Took it to the dealership and they fix the P0845 and cost $170.

They clear the P0420 and it last week it came back. The dealership clear it again and after driving 50 miles, it came back on.

I am going to visual check my exhaust and unplug/plug the 02 censor tomorrow.

Next month I need to do my emission test.

1. Is there anything else I can do?
2. Has the cat converter reach its shelf life?
3. Dealership said cost 1K to fix. I dont mind the fix, but what if thats not the problem?

welcome to the forum. From my past experience, with the test equiptment I've seen at my dealership, there has been a very minor amount of miss diagnostic check done. They tend to eat a lot if done wrong. At 150k there is a great possibility that the cat is going bad. If the incorrect type of fuel used or oil is beginning to burn more, or not tuned properly, or lots of other contributing items. You might want to do some research on the cost of the cat from different dealers. Or a muffler shop.

I have gone under to look at the CC. It is rusty. No sign of holes that I can find. I try to pull out the censor on either ends and I cant.

Then I pull out one of the fuse to reset the OBD code. I read the repair manual too.

I notice something. I go to check my car oil and the dipstick is dry. So now I put it 1 quart and its almost full on the dipstick.

I been using the same fuel that I got at Sams Club for years.

OK, let me see if the code come back in a few days.

if the cr-v is starting to burn oil, it will damage the cat. If so get a lesssor cost cat at a muffler shop, it will last a while but will not cost 1k dollars. The last cat I put in a ford van cost me 100.00 and passed the smog, and that was 6 years ago. It too was burning 1 qt of oil ea 1500 miles. passed smog 3 times since. Check prices, shop around first.

The last car I had is the Honda Civic and it too start burning oil after 150K.

I guess all cars are like that and it start burning oil after 150k?

My cousin said I should be using synthetic oil before it all began.

But I still dont know if that is the reason my P0420 light comes on. But so far, the light had no show up. I am going to drive on highway today and see.

good no light, but no, not all hondas after 150 k eat more oil. my o2 civic uses 0 oil in 5k miles, and I do use 5-20 syn mobil 1. the oil burn causes the cat to go bad.

The engine light still had not show up. I am keeping my finger crossed.

It would be nice to have a code for low engine oil instead of P0420 for a CC?

I dont think anything can be done to an engine when it gets old. It will start burning oil no matter what.

That mean I cant keep my car forever. I will get me a new car this year.

The reason my car is throwing those P0845 and P0420 code is because my car is burning oil because of old age of 153K now. As soon as I put in 1 quart of oil, the light goes away and I just pass my emission test after driving it about 100 miles.

BTW, when I went to the dealership the 2nd time, the guy that reset my code says this P0420 code for CC is common! Imagine how easy to get rip off by anyone!

What does this tell you ??? Never trust OBD code! So I dont know what to believe now!
