2013/14 CRV Engine Rattles at Cold Start-Up
I have had this rattle on start up from the engine in my 13 CRV since it was new. Have had it into the dealer and they of course cannot replicate it. I finally came across this bulletin a while ago and went back to the dealer again armed with this document. Again, they need to verify it but after having it overnight the noise still would not surface for them. It comes and goes. Some days it does it on every cold start and then it won't do it for many days.
the dealer is not convinced that the VCT Actuator is at fault and is reluctant to change it without actually hearing the noise.
Anyone familiar with this issue and if so, what have you done about it?

welcome to the forum. Only thing i can suggest is to document daily time, temperature, how many times it happens and how long it rattles, be patience. every time you take it in, mention it. the dealer will not fix anything they themselves cannot reproduce. if necessary and you don't need the use of your car, let them have it for a period of time that they can go run it up and listen to it rattle.

Update,
After sending the Service Manager a few videos of the noise when I started in the mornings, they have agreed to bring the CRV in and replace the actuator. All covered by Honda Canada Warranty. Hopefully this cures the problem.

I was going to recommend a video, taking different angles until it is obvious from where the noise was originating. How is it doing, now?

Variable Camshaft Timing; the actuator gets a signal from computer to advance timing, or something like that.
Some manufacturers call it Variable Valve Timing
