2015 CR-V a/c dealer asking $4000 to repair a/c system?

New here, thanks for the forum. I recently noticed on my 2015 CR-V that the A/C wasn't blowing cool air. I took it into the local dealer, thought it would be a simple freon top-up or similar -- but was told that somwehow (mystery) the A/C compressor blew up, causing metal fragments to ruin the whole system. They wanted a 'discounted' $3900 worth of repair to fix the problem. I can't afford that. Any thoughts?

Can you verify the compressor grenade-d? Likely would need a condenser. Depends on how fine of material and where it all went.
If they did not break into the system they don't know the extent of the damage and are giving you the worse case scenario.

So I don't know if that description constitutes "grenade-ing", but they did say they "opened system and swapped compressor high pressure line" to find this out.
I will try to find a more independent mechanic, I guess, to get a 2d opinion.
The reason I entered this info again, btw, was because I just found the dealer's complete mark-up sheet and wanted to include that in my 1st thread.

How much did they charge for the diagnosing? The HP line out of the compressor goes into the condenser and that's where most everything gets collected. To replace the HP line alone is rather stupid. Do you have the bill receipt of what they did?

Yes, diagnostic cost 189.90 plus tax ($202 altogether.) What they said they did was "..found Freon very low. Opened system and swapped compressor high pressure line and found metal debris/metallic contamination in the a/c oil. Compressor has failed and has circulated metal pieces throughout the AC system, internally clogging the condenser, expansion valve, and the AC evaporator. Entire system replacement is required to correct."
I did not pay an more than the diagnostic cost yet, because I wanted to get a 2d opinion, and could not afford their recommendation anyway.

This is the cost breakdown of parts and labor they advised I pay for:
AC Compressor: $1434.80
AC Condenser replacement: $560.88
AC Evaporator replacement (Price evaporator and EXPANSION valve: $1123.75
Other service repair (discharge hose, suction hose, AC Pipe A, AC Pipe receiver): $614.13
Evacuate and recharge R134a Freon: PERFORM A/C CHECKUP WITH SYSTEM LEAK TEST COMPRESSOR LUBE AND UP TO 1 LB FREON DISCHARGE: $199.95
Total
Factory: $4123.41
Aftermarket: $3734.49

That's the shotgun approach. We would flush the system do the HP line and condenser. Only if there are restrictions during the flush would we need to go after anything else.
