Electrical quits for no reason
HELP! My great little '98 CRV has a perplexing problem. The electrical system fails intermittently for no reason, stalling the vehicle. So far it has failed approx. 9 times and it has only failed on occasion when I slow down and take my foot off the accelerator at a stop sign or intersection. I have to push it to side of road and after about 2 to 5 minutes, electrical comes back on and I can restart the car. The battery and it's connections, the starter and alternator all have been checked and they are good. I can't continue to drive it for fear that it will fail in heavy traffic at night and I will be left with no headlights, leaving me in danger. It will drive fine for a day to a week or two with no problem. Then it will fail again. Has anyone had a similar problem? What could be the cause? My repairman can't figure it out.

welcome to the forum. I ran into this with another make car, and found at th fire wall the electrical connection ( many wires cannon plug ) to be loose, it only happened at various times, and the dealer was surprised to see this. on the firewall engine compartment side. this may be difficult to find on the crv.

Thanks Acmech52 . . .
I shared your info with my repairman. He said he would check that. He also found that the ignition and starter were defective. He will check the connection you speak of as well. Thanks.

note: if you have a key chain with lots of keys or junks, this can damage the ignition switch area. only have a key and alarm sys on the key chain. keep your other keys on another ring.

I only had the ignition key and the remote device for opening the doors on key ring. The repairman said it was the original ignition and was worn. I have been driving it again for two days and so far no stalls so I hope that was the answer.
I knew the school teacher I bought the CRV from four years ago. She was a heavy purse sort of person, so quite possibly she was also a heavy key ring sort of person. I'm glad to have my car back home. |
good to know.

I have heard of that with some GM cars.
