Honda CRV 1998 Failed emissions test

Hi Guys, I am new on here because I have an issue with my Fathers 98 CRV which has just failed its MOT. Emissions failed at 9% and I changed the Cat and the Lamda sensor which improved things to 5% but still a fail. I would appreciate any advise as to what can cause over fueling on these cars. I checked the plugs and they are sooty but not wet so whatever it is causing things it seems to be a general overfueling issue rather than one injector leaking etc. any idea or suggestions would be most welcome.

Kind regards Chris

Hello there! You may have the same issue as I had. I had issues with the piston rings on Cyl. 5 on my 2007 Ridgeline in the last 2 months. Been a solid vehicle since I bought in 2007 (365,000 miles). The issue I had was it threw a code for a missfire on cyl. 5. Shop tried everything, valve adj. swapping injectors, coil packs, nothing seemed to work, UNTIL he did a leak down compression test. All cylinders were still solid, EXCEPT #5. 25 percent leak down. The compression rings were failing. Now, he should have done that as the first test on a "high risk/high mileage" vehicle. Would have saved me 2 k in trouble shooting this thing. I got my monies worth out of it tho, not worth swapping out the engine. Bought a 22CRV now. But it was a great truck.
