Oil Capacity Issue

Hey guys, new to the board and I tried to search on this but didn't find anything.

So on Sunday I changed the oil for the first time in my 2017 CRV 1.5L Turbo. I had searched online and found several references saying that the capacity was 3.7L. Seemed low but I didn't question. So I drain the oil into my drain pan, pour 3.7L from my 5L jug into the engine, and then pour the old oil back into the 5L jug for disposal (yes, it's cheaper to buy 5L and throw away the unused than it is to buy 4L) ... and the jug overflows!

Based on how much overflowed onto the driveway and how much extra oil I added trying to get the level back up to the middle of the dipstick, it looks like there was maybe 4.7L in it originally.

Can someone tell me what just happened? Was I wrong about the 3.7L? What is the correct amount of oil for a change that includes changing the filter?

Thanks for any help.

welcome to the forum. your oil capacity for a cr-v with a filter is 4,2 liters.

Welcome in,I find the average in 4.5 but it tells you in the owners manual.

That's just it - the owner's manual says the 1.5L engine has an oil capacity of 3.7q including the filter.

acmech52 - where did you find the 4.2q number?

I found a forum entry over on CRVOG from 2009 saying that the pan would hold up to a quart that didn't reach the drain hole - so depending on the angle you were at when you drained, the amount of replacement oil would vary. Is that maybe what's going on? Seems weird that there's such a big discrepancy.

Well you will never be able to drain it completely, even if it's completely level, what I do is add what the manual says let it sit for half an hour and check it,add if need be,then write the amount down with a sharpie somewhere under the hood.also when I change my oil I leave the plug out for around half an hour to drain as much as possible.

found the info on a cr-v forum. owner did his own oil chg and after run he had to add to stick level with a total oil of 4.2l did not state a manual.

OK, thanks for the help, guys. Sounds like for whatever reason this isn't as exact a science as it has been for my other vehicles.

thank you friend your oil capacity for a cr-v with a filter is 4,2 liters.

YIKES.....
Numbers posted in this thread:
3.7L
4,2 liters
4.5
3.7q
4.2l
4,2 liters

So, I still don't have the answer to the OP's question.

3.7 liter = 3.909 746 374 9 quart [US, liquid]
4.2 liter = 4.438 090 479 6 quart [US, liquid]

I have done more research and on several sites the 17 CR-V 1.5 turbo holds 3.7. I would add 3.7 let it sit a while on a level pad and check your dip stick.
