So, why AWD?

I get crap mileage in my 2014 CR-V (bet. 20-24 mpg) and a friend told me part of the reason is because of the AWD. I looked it up, and sure 'nuff, AWD systems must use more energy delivering power to all four wheels, and they are also heavier, which hampers fuel economy further.

So, why do I even need AWD? I live in Northern California, where it rarely snows. I see a lot of CR-Vs out there, and I'm wondering why do so many people have them with AWD when we really don't need it?

And yes, part of the reason I get bad mileage is because I drive too fast.

Thanks for any help!

AWD is not only good in snow but it helps keep control in wet weather, if you were to hit standing water most cars would hydroplane ,but with AWD you have more control and traction. I must say you get better mileage than I do in my new Ford F-150 .

After going from my 2001 Hyundai Elantra to my 2007 Honda CRV, I saw a drop in the gas mileage I was getting on the newer vehicle
Then I figured that the Honda is bigger and AWD system just adds to the lower gas mileage.
I enjoy the bigger vehicle and so does my family. AWD is just better here in New York winters.

If you want better gas mileage then get a smaller car???

i have driven in soft sand, soft dirt, snow, hydroplaned, i would get one, but cannot justify awd unless i was dong this 6 mos out of a year, so stuck with 2 wheel drive and chains or cable. if i intend to ski, i rent a 4 wheel for the weekend.
