Default Proper Oil Level Check Technique

I have a 2005 Honda Shadow Aero VT750CA and want to know the proper way to check the oil level. Do you screw in the dip stick when chacking the oil or not? I have people tell me both ways. Some say screw it in to check the oil level and others say you do not.

I believe the bike needs to be level and recently started (so the oil filter has oil in it).

What is the right way?

Thanks,

Confused
