Honda engine stamp - what can I learn from it?

So there is a stamp on the engine block of my 96 civic - it's got the 4 digit model number, with 7 digit serial beneath it. I found some sites that explain a little bit, but pretty much just telling me what they are in general, no specific info. Is there any place/website to type in exactly my own serial number and get the info about this engine? The couple websites I did find, simply didn't work. I know some cars have the VIN stamped on the engine block, so maybe that would be more useful - does anyone know where that would be on a 96 civic?

I am wanting to look up info about the engine as its not the original that came in this car.

welcome to the forum. B16A B series of engine, 16 1.6 liter, A manufacturing location, numbers is the sequence. ( 0000000001 1st engine made.) vin # on the car is infront of the dash board drivers side also on the drivers door below the window level. the engine does not have a vin #. if you go to Wikipedia you may find more info you are looking for. if may take a while to find out where the engine came from due to so many engines used in so many different civics, acuras. different years. serial nbr may help. if you find more info, come back and advise us please. we also like to know more on Honda's.

Hey thanks for the reply! I can get the VIN that's beneath the window and door, but I'm trying to find out where the engine itself came from which is why I was curious if its on the engine itself. This is the serial number I had found:

3650746 . And the model number above that was : 16Y7 . I think so. It was difficult to see due to build up of oil or grime on the engine block. Hey I will do a bit of research here and post what I find out. I likely need to swap out some parts and I'm paranoid that the engine in my civic doesn't match up with what was there before which is why I'm curious to find the origin of this engine before I diy. Will keep update w any useful info I uncover :)
