1994 Honnda Civic 5 speed oil burning
Hello, recently I had my piston rings and valve seals and all the gaskets replaced because of engine oil burning issue.
At the time it was burning about 1 1/2 quart of oil every 250 to 300 miles. I went through numerous oil changes and even tried engine restore additive twice with no success. 10w30, 20w-50 So, after replacing the rings and seals the mechanic did a oil change but over filled the oil by a quart of Valvoline 10w-30. So, few days later I did a oil change with Mobile 1 synthetic 5w-30 and a week later checked by oil and come to find out about 1 and 1/2 quart of oil disappeared with in like 200 miles of city driving. Later on i called the mechanic he told me the oil is two thin so I added quart and half of Castrol 10w-30 and its still burning oil. I already have a full tune up with PCV valve and everything. There is no leaks under the car. and no smoke coming out the tail pipe. So my question is where is the oil going ? I thought the oil consumption will stop if I replaced the piston rings and valve stem seals. I'm in dire need of solution. also sometimes it idles funny like drops to 400 rpm and goes up to 800 rpm and back and forth anyone? |
check your idle cut valve for carbon or clean it. your oil burning, need to stick with one type of oil and not mix it, need to ask your mech who replaced the rings what is his reccommended oil because if the oil burn continues, he will have to redo the engine.
normally when you change rings on an engine, you put in "break in oil" to help the rings seat or comform to the walls of the cylinder. keep track of the oil burn/loss. make sure no leaks on the floor, watch for smoke at the tail pipe. If you have had this work done, what warranty is your mech giving you? |
