2001 Civic head gasket

Mechanic told my wife her 2001 Civic was in need of a new head gasket. Not being mechanically inclined I did a little research and it doesn't look like a very time consuming or expensive job. (Pull spark plug boots, remove bolts, remove cover and gasket, clean surfaces, replace gaskets, bolt cover, replace boots. can anyone tell me what such a job should cost. Don't want to get "taken over the hill" Thank you in advance.

repair shop approx 750.00 dealer a bit higher due to labor this incl timing belt, water pump, anti-freeze, oil and filter, headgasket, crank and cam seals. (EST) If you get yourself a shop service manual, it will help you to do the job yourself.
