Question 96 accord vtech charging or electrical issue?

Hello people I have a issue I hope someone can help with. I have a 96 accord vtech 5spd. Yesterday I was driving and I noticed the gauges were not working and car acted like it wanted to stall a few times so I manage to get it home and shut it off and try to start it and nothing ! Battery is dead. So i clean the cables and get new battery. Today I go to store and leave it running I come out to the gauges not working. So I shut it off and sure enough battery is dead . I get a jump and drive home. Leave it running for about 15 minutes go out and no gauges working radio don't work and heater or wipers don't work but car still running. I shut it off and battery dead again?? I thought maybe alternator but think it wouldn't run with dead battery and bad alternator?.. Please any help will be appreciated. Thanks

my experience has been, if the battery is good and I start the engine, and if the alternator is charging, i can disconnect the alternator and the engine will continue to run. if the alternator is not good or weak and the battery is disconnected, the engine will die. Sounds like you need to take the alternator in for a check to see if it charges.
