Default Problem With 89 Honda Civic DX

I have an 89 Honda Civic DX. It has 121000 original miles on it. For about 2-3 weeks, my car has been acting strange. It dies when I try to start it up. It starts and then about a second later it jumps a little and dies. I try to start it again, and it dies again. The third time usually works and it's fine the rest of the trip. It does this at least once every day. I've replaced the fuel filter, radiator cap, spark plugs and spark plug wires, and did an oil change. While replacing the spark plug wires, my friend noticed oil on the spark plugs, and found that there is a leak in the valve gasket. I asked my mechanic for a rough guess of what he thinks it might be, and he said it could be the valve gasket or possibly a sensor. Has anybody had a similar problem? If so what was the cause of it? Also, how much would fixing a sensor or valve gasket cost for an 89 Honda? Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
