Shocks and maintenance

I have a 1993 Honda cbr 600 motorcycle and I'm trying to learn as much as a i can about storing for the winter, maintaining it during the summer, and taking care of it. It's an older bike so I'm wondering if the shocks just get old or if there's a way I can make them better other than the fork screws and the screw for the rear shock. Does the fork oil have anything to do with the fork shocks. When I give someone a ride I sink so low and my buddy has a newer bike and his doesn't sink low at all. Any help would be greatly appriciated. Thanks
