Slow Acceleration/Shaking

I have a '91 Accord with an automatic transmission. About 2 months ago the car started shaking and sputtering a little. I changed the fuel filter but didn't notice any improvement. I decided to hold off on the next recommended action from some of the boards I have looked at which is cleaning/replacing the EGR valve. But now I am having problems accelerating after stopping. This started about a week ago and the sports light turned on and hasn't gone off since then. The only time the vehicle seems to accelerate properly is when I drop it down to 1. In any other gear the vehicle accelerates very slowly. I have also noticed a clicking sound coming from under the car. The check engine light hasn't come on but I tried to see if I can pull a code anyway from the diagnostic terminal using a paper clip. When I turn the key to the ON position I only get a solid ON CHECK ENGINE light, which I believe means there is no code stored.
