Default '05 Stereo interface

2005 Accord, 4 door, 4 cylinder... I realize the stereo/clock was recalled but I missed the January 2012 deadline (mine just recently stopped working). It worked for a while by simply removing the negative battery cable and then connecting it again. The stereo/clock would come on and work for a short time and then stop again. Now that doesn't even work. The Honda dealer wants $450 just for the <motherboard/circuit board>? not even including labor.
I cannot afford this. What are my options? Can I buy an aftermarket stereo and install it or is the problem deeper within?
I'm not new to general mechanical repairs but this electronic stuff is over my head. Please help.
Many thanks,
T

Welcome in,thry this first
Look in your owner's manual booklet for your radio anti-theft code. The code is printed on a small card (similar to a credit card) and included with your owner's manual. If you can find the code, skip to Step 5.
If you cannot find the code, you'll need to retrieve it.
Turn your ignition off to begin retrieving your radio code. Press and hold the "1" and "6" preset buttons on your radio. Turn your ignition on.
Write down the code displayed on your radio. The display will flash with two numbers: one beginning with a "U" and one beginning with a "L." Write down both numbers (beginning with the "U" number), and then disregard the "U" and the "L."
This number (eight digits) is your radio serial code. You'll need it to retrieve your radio anti-theft code.
Contact Honda to retrieve your radio anti-theft code. You'll need your 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number, found beneath the driver's side of the windshield and your radio serial code. Honda's customer service number is (800) 999-1009. Provide the representative with the information to acquire your radio anti-theft code.
Turn your ignition to "Acc" or "On" to power on your radio. Enter your radio anti-theft code using the preset buttons at the bottom of your radio. For example, if your anti-theft code is "55512," you would press the "5" button three times, then the "1" button, then the "2" button. This will unlock and reset your Honda radio.

Hope this helps you.

yes you can just install an aftermarket radio but i believe the dash has to be completely replaced due to the design being that the AC and other functions are attached to it as a whole. there are companies like METRA that make kits but there not cheap like this
Amazon Amazon
then you will need a wiring harness another 10 bucks also the steering control wiring if you have steering wheel control then the price of the head unit another 150 bucks then the price to install everything if you pay someone to do it. but even with all that you wouldbe payingless then half of what the dealerwantsand you gain soundqualityand ipod connections with a new head unit.if you DIY this will help
