1982 Accord LX Hatch: Hub Stuck?

I cannot get the passenger side hub off this damn car!! I followed the Service Manual instructions:
- Tierod is off
- Lower ball joint is off
- Shock absorber is off
- Of course caliper assembles is off
- Even pulled the CV boot off to check inside

the manual says at this point to pull the hub from the axle. But this damn this isn’t coming off by hand.
Resorted to the old “2 C-clamp trick” and that’s failing.
Amy ideas?!?!
Thank you!

Can’t get the damn hub free!!

welcome to the forum. did you remove the nut holding the axle from backing out, takes about 150 lbs to loosen. i use a 24" breaker bar with a 5 ft cheater pipe. takes a 32mm socket i think. normally taken off or loosen up before the brake caliper is removed.

Seadude 09-15-2019 10:09 PM

Most definitely, yes. I went to the auto store and bought the 32mm impact socket to remove.
Thank you for checking, I know the photo doesn’t show it.
Any further ideas for how to get this hub off?

You have a case of rust welding. That is when rust is so bad that parts are almost welded together.
Have seen videos where the mechanic puts it under s 20 ton press and still did not come out.
They bought a new knuckle/hub.

I would do as you did and put it under pressure
Then take a hammer and smack the CV out
Sometimes it needs the pressure and a shock of the hammer to loosen it.

When I have problems removing a bolt or nut, I heat it up with propane or map gas
Then douse it with lots of water to quench the heat

Do that a couple of times and maybe it will loosen??
Good luck

Nice video! (pretty entertaining to watch!). I was able to get the driver side off today with no issue, just pulled it off by hand after a little tap on the axle. The passenger side is the one that will require some intervention. I'll see if I can find a gear puller and some torch.
Thanks for sharing your expertise!

Sorry, no expertise here.
I am just another do it yourself or Sunday back yard mechanic.
I am just fumbling my way through.
Trying hard to save money on car repair

Oh, when you put it back together, remember to clean and put anti-seize on the mating pieces
Makes it easier if you have to take them apart again

Yo! The puller worked! Thanks again!

Weird thing: absolutely no rust! The bearing is definitely bad on that side.

Must have been cocked in there. That being said, how do I know if I need to replace the passenger side axle or CV?

acmech52 09-23-2019 05:48 PM

i would replace it and not have to worry for a long time.

I am with ACmech52. CV is not too expensive and will save you headaches in the future if it is bad.

I thought new was not much more??
Do you have to send the core back to them??

Following up here...

Machine shop who pressed the old hubs and bearings out said the replacement hubs I bought were the wrong size (dammit!). He said they shoulder was too wide and wouldn't press in.
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/hondafo...0ba70c6606.jpg

He was able to use the new bearings that came with the kit and press in the old hubs along with some new lugs.

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/hondafo...c09d931417.jpg

This worked fine for the drivers side. I was able to install that side today, no problem.

Moved to the passenger side, the one I had to use the puller on... the axle spindle won't go into the old hub... its too borked (dammit!).

Going to have to purchase a new passenger side axle and the correct hub... so the question.. Which freaking hub is the correct one to get for a 1982 Honda Accord LX?

CarID.com told me it was this one, newp.

Not sure if any cares, but I got the correct hub AND a new passenger side axle all installed.

This job:
- Replaced both wheel bearings
- Replaced passenger side hub
- Replaced passenger side axle
- New front brake pads
- Bled brakes

The correct hub was this one:
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/hondafo...309f4e6f03.jpg

The splines on the new axle were longer, but it the hub just fine:

More flicks:

Lessons learned:
  • Get the right hub!
  • Make sure your lug nuts are deep enough for lugs!
  • Don't give up when trying to insert your new axle. Once you get past the initial "click" of the spring clip, and the axle feels "bottomed out", try a rubber mallet to drive it home.
  • The rear brake bleeders are a PITA to get to! AND are some non-standard size of socket! (not 10mm, not 9mm, not 8mm)

The part numbers were the same 518504.
Assuming the correct part was in the correct box, it should have worked.
Or just bad manufacturing.

Anyway, thanks for the update.
Glad you were able to get it fixed right.

Seadude 10-28-2019 11:49 PM

Interesting, I didn't notice that before. Wonder if the "NT" in front of the correct one means anything. I wish I would have taken a picture of the two side-by-side. The CV-facing shoulder was a good 1/16th - 1/8th inch higher.
