Default 1992 Honda Accord transmission problem

I barged a 1992 Honda Accord from CA to Guam. When I dropped it off it was running great, but when I picked it up (28 days later) the (automatic) transmission has problems. It seems like it is stuck in 2nd gear. I took it to a mechanic in Guam who has said that it is not starting in 1st and not shifting right and that I should drive it for a few days and maybe it will fix itself. Doesn't seem like the best advice. It will start in 1st if I manually put it in D1 and then will shift up when I put it in D2, no change after I put it in D3 or D4. Someone recommended just changing the transmission fluid. Any advice?

welcome to the forum If your fluid has not been changed in the last 30k miles its due. Also check the variable speed sensor, it might be loose, dirty, going bad. If you have a service manual, this would help. If not go to Autozone.com and register for free, and go to repair. your car info is already set up and wire diagrams also are available.

Default update

The transmission fluid was changed (fluid from dealer), but no improvement. I have noticed that when the car is in drive (D4) it is either stuck in 3rd gear or 4th gear. If it is stuck in 3rd and I put it in D1 it will go into 1st gear and if I put it in D2, D3, or D4 it goes into 3rd. If it is stuck in 4th gear and I put it in D1 or D2 it will go into 2nd and if I put it in D3 or D4 it will go into 4th. Does this info shed new light on the problem?
