Default 6-speed transmission problems

Today while driving down the road I was cut off by a mini van running a stop sign. I slowed down but being that Ive never drove a stick until this week only slammed the brake until hitting the clutch finally after i realized it was about to stall. I'm pretty sure I was in 4th when it happened and doing 50 mph. the problem now is that I had to pull over due to a very hot clutch and now it grinds going into 1st. is this a major problem? Or something that will work itself out?

welcome to the forum, Might check to see the fluid level is correct in the transmission. also the slave cylinder if the car has one for proper fluid level. grinding into first gear only means a worn syncro.

Ok, thank you. Just one last question.. Would this still be a factor in a brand new car? It only has 320 miles on It. I don't know that it had enough time to wear down the sycrho in that short of time. Plus the fluid levels wear fine.. So maybe just a faulty clutch?

don't touch or do anything if it a new car, take it to the dealer and tell them what it does. document everthing the car does, document everything the dealer says and does or does not do. they will always say it shifts ok, this is to make sure you get your new car fixed properly and not left out in the dark.
