Car developed a loud thunking noise from front right that got steadily worse. Tried to get it home without towing it and the front right wheel froze up and sheared off at the lug nuts. (Ended up towing it anyway) Wheel bearing fine. CV boot looks fine but havent gotten the hub/rotar off yet to observe it well. Wheel turns freely if transmission is not engaged. Is it possible the differential is trashed or is this obvious signs of something else?

If your wheel bearing is fine, your cv may have frozen up. check this first. boot can look fine on the outside, inside may be locked up. transmissions do not usually lock up like this.
