Question Bouncing Tach

Howdy,

My 1989 Accord LXi has a problem with a bouncing tach.
The engine will surge with the bounce momentarily.
The Engine problem light does not come on.
I could not find a vacuum leak.
since it was time, I have replaced the Air cleaner, spark plugs, wires, PCV, Dist cap and rotor and cleaned the IAC. I tested between each part replacement.
All fluids are correct.
All that is left is the O2 sensor or I missed a vacuum leak.

Any thoughts??

Welcome to the forum, check your ignition control module inside the distributer...that could be the cause or perhaps a sensor that is inside the distributer is bad,or a bad ground or coil.

I thought about those problems. I am hoping it is not the ICM as that is too expensive for me right now.
I did notice that the engine sort of revved with the tach for that second or two that it went up to 2 or 3K.

I will try the O2 sensor firat as they are under $30 for both.

I had a long talk with a local auto parts guy (races on weekends) and he said it might be that the IAC is stuck open, a vacuum leak, or a bubble in the system.

Being retired gives me lots of time to tinker so I will start with the least troublesome and work from there

Well... after such a long absence I should explain I only get out of the house about one or two days a week now. No energy left and waiting for the next Cath lab opening at the V.A.

still have the same problem with the car except that sometimes it will be normal, no tach bouncing with the engine trying to catch up with the bounce, nice smooth engine and very good acceleration.
Now however, when it is at its worst, the "battery" light will come on for a moment and almost stall out. I have a helper today so we will be tearing into this problem. If they could have put the alternator in a worse place I do not know where that is.
