running/starting trouble

hi guys, newbie needing some help. my accord 1.8 2000 is playing up. went to start it yesterday and it wouldn't fire at all, tried for ages and eventually after flooring the pedal which from memory is usually needed if its flooded it started. it was ropey for a while then seemed to clear, I tried to drive off and it cut out and was difficult to re start. today I disconnected a few plugs and leads and the ht leads and cleaned them up with wd40. this seems to have improved things but its still not right and sometimes stops again after starting. any pointers on where to start???
