The sound has the same repetition as a nail or rock stuck in the tire... Increasing in frequency at higher speeds and slowing at lower speeds.

I didn't see anything on the tire, but I did take these picks from the R/L wheels while changing the oil.

The discoloration/leak is on the same wheel that creates the unusual sound.

I'm not car savvy... What am I looking at here in terms of repairs?

Sounds to me like steering rack problems,the knocking you are hearing is because it has become loose.Do you hear the knocking in curves also and does it get worse in curves than straight line driving.

 

I haven't recognized a difference, but it's constant.
