In the mini shelf directly in front of the gear shift, there's an square opening maybe 1.5x3" on the top level... is this some kind of alteration by the previous owner or is it to be able to put two phones on both shelves with the cords going into the square hole or for some other purpose? There are notches maybe best described as similar to the connections for a landline phone and the wall of your house?

 

welcome to the forum. sounds like an add on, sometimes uber drivers add a few items to do their navigation while driving and also to run a computer or TV. .
