Default 6th Gen vs. 7th Gen

I'm shopping for a used car in the $3,000 price range. I want something reliable that, with the proper maintenance, will last me a few years without continual costly repairs (that probably goes without saying). From the research I've done, it looks like a 6th gen Civic is my best bet. Because I'm looking for an automatic, I'm looking for 97s, 99s and 00s in particular. But I also know that finding a car that's been well taken care of probably makes a bigger difference than anything. And I'm having trouble finding Civics in those years that are nearby, (relatively) low miles, good CarFax, etc., etc.

So here's my question. Although 6th gen Civics may be better than 7th gen Civics in a lot of ways (especially in my price range), should I be ruling out 7th gens all together, or should I start to give them a second look? Am I better off getting another make/model vehicle? Or is a 7th gen Civic that's been well cared for still a much better bet than just about any other make/model in my price range?

Any thoughts/opinions would be very welcome. Thanks!

Welcome in,first look at the condition of the cars interior and appearance in general,if it looks well cared for than the maint. Was most likely done regularly.look for any receipts for work completed .always drive the car and listen for anything out of ordinary .are the tires and belts / hoses in good shape, does it shift smooth.any motor leaks. I myself would look for a good used 1999-2003 Accord, they are great little cars.good luck.

Thanks so much, Bucwheat. I'll check out 99-03 Accords. I really appreciate the advice!
