AC stops working after driving 10 miles

I have a 2002 Honda Civic LX sedan. I had this problem last year and took it to a local garage where the mechanic topped off the coolant (although he said it wasn't down that much) and cleaned out the orifice tube. It worked (somewhat) better, but not like I remember it being. This year it's the same problem - nice and cool for 10 miles, then suddenly it's blowing ambient temp air. What would be the suspected problem given this description?

welcome to the forum. on my 02 civic, the thermister was cracked, it is located in the duct area near the fan under the glove box, held in with 2 screw/bolt. it looks like a coil with green ceramic material. also the presser sensor could go out. it gives a low freon sense and stops the compressor from engaging.

Thanks for your response. I'm an old lady that doesn't know much about car innards and am not mechanically handy. I wanted to take it to the dealership garage, but a friend to whom I mentioned this said if they have to replace the condenser, it will cost more than the car is worth and maybe I should consider getting a new car. I told her that I've had so much replaced on it in the last 4 years, I almost have a new car. I just wanted an idea of what the problem might be so I am not bamboozled for repairs.

i owned a 02 civix dx and had a/c and a good radio installed, got over 320k hwy miles. just changed fluids and brakes. yours should go a long time, and if the a/c goes out, it is still cheaper than a new car. any car over 5 years old starts to do the nickle and dime to fix , but is still cheaper than an new car payment or cost. but if you do decide to get a new car, text me and i try to help you on how to buy one and get a good price.

It might help if you told your general area. It might give additional clues and/or someone may know a good, honest shop to suggest like Mustang Auto here in Friendswood. Good luck with it.
