Default brake fluid

What is the life of the factory brake fluid (2003 DL)?
Reservoir is low and dealer in Naples, FL is sayingfluid is "dirty":flush and replace - $80.[:-]
Seems a little extreme to me.[8D] Why not just top off?

Default RE: brake fluid

dealers like to keep the cars they maintain in good safe conditon, the fluid drop helps to determine the ware on the brakes. ex: if the fluid is low, it may mean the front brakepads are worn a bit, or the rear brakes need to be adjusted (drum type). the fluid does not ware out but old fluid has a tendency to eat away (corrode) the brake cylinders or calipers over a long period of time. I have changed my fluid after 4 brake pad changes with thedisk machined smooth. 120,000 miles in 2 1/2 years.
