Civic won't be driven for 12 weeks
 

I have a 2009 Honda Civic, and I won't be able to drive for 12 weeks after surgery and have a cast on my foot. No one else available to drive the car.


I'm thinking I should hobble out to the car about once a week, and start it up and let it run for a bit to charge the battery and get the oil moving.


I'm wondering if there is anything more I should do, or anything else? Any suggestions?

keep the gas tank full and ad Sta-bil fuel stabilizer. clean wax and cover the car if left outside. dont use the hand brake use wheel stops. keep any critters out they will chew up wires you can use mothballs around the car. also call your insurance company and ask if they can lower the rate for the time its not being used.

As you probably know, your Honda's computers will continue to draw current even though it is parked. After a few weeks the battery could wear down to the point the car will not start. You could disconnect one battery terminal, but then you will need to re-enter the radio security code after re-connecting to prevent damage. I store both my Honda's for about 6 months alternately every year. I use a device called a Battery Minder which connects to the battery & maintains the charge over long periods of non use. It only is capable of producing a trickle charge of 750ma. & will not charge a discharged battery but will maintain a fully charged battery indefinitely without damaging the cells or boiling the electrolyte. I've used them on all my vehicles that are not driven daily for the past 10 yrs or so. They are cheap & reliable. I even use one on my garden tractor & golf cart.

We go on vacations up to two weeks at a time and I use a battery tender on my vette and accord,the diesel I don't worry about because they have two batteries but the tender helps.
