Default Oil Leak

My 2002 Civic LX sedan has developed an oil leak (at least I think it's oil) coming from the front center - it's making a mess on the garage floor. I'm surprised the oil light hasn't come on. I took it to a dealership and they wanted more than the wholesale value of the car to fix it ($1200). The service manager said it was because it was a long and "labor intensive" repair; they have to take the engine apart to replace the gasket. They also suggested that I leave the car and not wait for it because it would take so long. Does this scenario and price sound reasonable?

Sounds like they are going to R&R the timing cover and seal things up. Your car is worth more than you think. The dealers price is high. Take it to a small shop.
