Transmission Trouble

Hi I am new to this forum. I have a tech question regarding a 1996 honda civic ex with 5 speed manual. The car is unable to shift and engage into 4th gear. Does this sound like a possible bent shift fork? Any advice as to diagnosing the problem. The car's cruse control doesn't work. The light on dash and switch are light but the car won't maintain speed. Thanks for any help you could give me.

Ok so you have 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th and reverse? I would start and check out your linkage underneath just to eliminate any simple problems. You not using a short throw shifter are you? Not that it does anything to cause this problem but maybe. It may very well have a bent fork inside the casing.

Cruise control usually functions off of a vacuum hose under the hood. Double check make sure all the hose are good going to the unit. Cruise control is usually on the driver's side under the hood. Make sure all the cables are hooked up the way the are supposed to be and check the fuses with a test light and make sure none of them are blown. Hope this helps.

it's probably a worn 4th gear synchro a bent fork would cause it to be stuck or pop out of 4th. if it's only 4th most likely worn synchro. which means new tranny

honda accord will not catch reverse 1990

My honda accord goes into all other gears fine, but when i put it into reverse it makes a loud noise and will not catch. someone told me that it could be the front axles are worn out on the gears. has anyone ever heard of this?

your reverse gear is probably worn out because it is the only gear that is not synchronized its probably a broken teeth inside the tranny because its not engaging
