Assuming you have a 4th gen. civic (88-91)....
I do not believe there are any hang ups on hooking a d-series vtec motor to your trans. And you could always do the mini me swap. Just need a head off of a 5th or 6th genration civic w/vtec pretty much bolts on with a little modification and then you just have to set up the vtec controller. This is also assuming you have the 1.6 liter w/multi-port fuel injection. Vtec does not like the duel point set up on the gen 4 civic with the 1.5.
