brake lights, but no tail lights or dash lights on my 99 passport

I bought a 99 passport 2 days ago and discovered that the dashlights and tail lights are not working while driving home in the dark from school. My grandfather worked for Ford for 20+ years, but couldn't help me locate a problem. We checked the fuses, he checked the light bulbs, cleaned the corroded battery and noticed some funny looking wiring that probably shouldn't be there that looks like it was wired for the trailers the original owners would tow with the passport. I can't take it to an open auto electric shop til monday, does anyone have any advice on maybe something I could do, or check to see what's going on, or any familiar stories, any input would be appreciated! Thanks!

Welcome to the forum,Your brake pedal switch may be gone,They are easy to replace and not that costly.Not sure what is going on with the dash lights ,did you check the brightness control ****?
