welcome to the fourm. We can use a trans person on this forum.
Q. I've noticed many members ask about the 98-02 accord auto trans having failure problems, could you brief me on what causes this failure/problems to occure, or perhaps ways to prevent its failure. many under 100k miles. Thanks acmech52@yahoo.com

RE: transmissions

Thanks for the welcome,

That's a good question, there are times when I will have 5 to 10 Honda's or Acura's a month. Acura uses the same transmissions. Before I go any farther though, I love Honda's, even with their trans failure. I love working on them. The only trouble they give is the trans. Anyway, the problem is for some reason the Honda clutches inside the trans are wearing down or peeling out. Mostly in the 2nd and 4th clutch drum. Why, don't know and neither does Honda. We can put money on that everyone of them that comes in that's what's wrong. There is no way to prevent it, no magic fix, except to pull it out and rebuild it. If this problem happens you notice the symptons will be slipping, slide shifts, and or a long 1st gear. If you do have to get a rebuild, make sure the shop is going to use Honda clutches back in the trans, you can't use any other clutches. They will have mushy shifts and shudder issues. I hope this helps or if I can help more I will.

Oh one other note, it doesn't stop at 02. I'm doing 04's and 05's with this problem also.

Thanks very much for the response, now it makes a lot of sense why the failure. Although with the amount of hondas sold, there are not that many trans that go bad. Again thank you for the response.

RE: transmissions

Your right, the ones I see the most are Honda Accord, 4 cyl and V6, Honda Odyssey, Acura 3.2 CL and 3.2 TL. The rest of them I don't see, they seemed to be doing OK.
