Default 2010 Pilot - 100k miles camshaft replacement

Hi everyone,

I hope this is the right place for this. We've had our 2010 pilot for about 5 years now. A few months ago we noticed a clicking nose coming from the engine whenever accelerating or revving to higher RPMs. It almost sounded to me like a loose belt slapping a cover as it was rotating. No loss of power or trouble idling.

We took it to the dealer yesterday and were told that the camshafts probably need to be replaced. $500 to verify, $1500 for one camshaft, $2000 for both.

My question is, does that even sounds reasonable that a camshaft would fail after 100k miles of light (mostly highway, no trailer pulling etc.)? After doing research it doesn't sound like camshafts fail very often at all.

Secondly, do those prices seem reasonable? I called a regular mechanic to get another estimate, but haven't heard back due to Thanksgiving.

Any insight is very much appreciated. Thank you! And Happy Thanksgiving!

welcome to the forum. only experience i've had with a bad cam was with a gmc, flat cam at 64k. never on a honda to date. i would have a friendly mech adjust the valves and check the compression, if all is well and does not happen again, good to go. my honda fit had to adjust my valves at 180k,( 1st adjustment) still running smooth at 286k.

I agree, not unheard of but rare occurance, let another mechanic adjust valves and get a second opinion.

had the same issue.... flaked camshaft; likely caused by valve being too tight

I think dealer is full of it. Go to a Honda mechanic shop or outside mechanic. The rocker stands are known to loosen sometimes. Take it in to have the rocker stands torque checked and retorqued and have valves adjusted at same time

Why resurrect these old posts? I think in 5 years he's taken care of the problem.

Absolutely ! It is a GOOD IDEA to bring these old posts up as somebody else could have the same problem with the same year model car etc.
