Default Ipod adapter/GPS mount

I know that only "authorized" Ipod adapters are the Music Link ones for the 2006 models on. Is there any reason the 06 adapter wouldn't work on an earlier model?

Secondly, has anyone found a good spot to mount a GPS device other than using the stupid suction cup attached to the front windshield? There has to be some other way so that if you got in an accident, the passenger airbag didn't propel the GPS into your face... I'm really not into plastic surgery...
