1986 shadow vt500c
 

I just picked up a shadow that was stored for 4yrs., I cleaned the carb's, put in new gas, and still will only idle with choke on. I can not shut off choke, or start it with choke off . It will run when I pour gas in carbs,until gas runs out. What should I do next ?

When you say you cleaned the carbs, you did take them apart and wash down the slides and remove the gum in the bottom of the bowls? the time the bike sits, the gas developes into gum and sticks everything in the carb, so usually take apart all and reassemble. Yes I did take the carbs apart, and cleaned with carb cleaner. I just went out and checked and found the diaphragm in the left carb was sticking. Do I just clean it all over again ? Thanks for the welcome.

To acmech52, I took the bike to a mech.,and he cleaned the carbs again and darn, I didn't clean them good enough .I drained the tank again , put in more new gas, cleaned the plugs and now the bike runs .Thank-you for your advice Bob
