Question 8,600 mi. and 30% oil life

Hi everyone,

The title of the post summarizes my concern. My family has been doing a significant amount of highway driving (where our speed ranges from 0 MPH at merge points to 70 MPH on flat stretches) for the past 3 months. I was told to expect the Maintenance Minder to prompt me to change the oil at about 8,500 for the first oil change, but the oil life monitor says the vehicle still has 30% useful oil life. Is this reporting trustworthy?

In order of importance:
Going 0 mph on a highway may be considered reckless driving.

Stop listening to whoever told you to expect 8,500 miles for the first, or any other oil change for that matter. That is not how the MM works.

MM indicates minimum service requirements. Thats fine if you are going to dump it after warranty or if its on a lease. Otherwise no more than 7,500 mi on full syn for 2.0L or 5,000 mi for 1.5T is what the oil gurus generally recommend.

The MM uses a well refined algorithm and is accurate. Mileage is only one of many data points it uses.

First, on the highways around here, you encounter stop-and-go conditions ( 0-5 MPH) at merge/split points of major roads.

Thanks for the more realistic mileage oil change points.

Sorry, I misunderstood the highway merge points. Yes, most have no clue how to zipper and entry ramps are inadequate in most metro areas. Thats how a nice interstate turns into a parking lot.

As do vehicle Accidents and Highway repairs that seem to be the norm on certain Highways around our area in the Dallas/Fort Worth Texas Area.

Was there in October coming from ABQ Balloon Fiesta to Sulpher Springs. Saw all the red and yellow on Apple Maps so we took a lot of Farm to Market roads around the North side of that mess.

Our daughter and her family live outside of Canton but guess I missed that. I had not heard about it.

Yes, I am so glad I retired from DFW Airport Board in 2019 and do not have to deal with it most days.

we have two CRVs... I am an old school (75 years old) driver. I have attempted to explained my "oil change theory". That the % of "oil life" is, like the mileage indicators... an INDICATOR. I do NOT intend to ever go beyond 5k before oil & filter are changed. I see no point in seeing how far I can travel before the "oil life indicator" is down to 10-15%...
just my opinion... YMMV.
