Default Can a ECU from a 2002 or 2003 crv work for my crv 2004?

Im in mexico and my mechanic says my 2004 crv needs a new ecu. Ive looked for over a year but I cant find an ecu from the same year. Ive seen a few from 2002 and 2003 but the mechanic told me they wouldn't work. I looked on ebay and found a few but in the item description it says the ecu works for CRVs from the years 2002 to 2004 so Im just wondering if my mechanic is wrong when he says ecu has to be only from the year 2004.
I told the mechanic about ECUs from ebay but he told me those wouldn't work either because my crv was made for the mexican market.
I dont know if I should believe the mechanic since I live in a small town and most mechanics here dont have much experience with hondas.
Thanks for any help

I don't know the equivalest of toyodiy.com for Hondas' but it needs to have the same serial number. Even with the same engine, they have ECUs with different pin configurations so they can't just be swapped out. You could carefully look at the pins on your car and the ebay ECU and maybe? But you really need the serial numbers to match up.

Thanks a lot for replying buddy. Then its gonna be a pain finding an ecu from the same year here in mexico. The good thing is that I can still drive it just fine with the bad ecu, its just that the check engine light wont go away.

I found this website: https://www.hondapartsnow.com/genuine/honda~ecu~37820-r5a-a87.html That control unit is for my car. Input your VIN number into the search and find the part number for yours, then search for it on Ebay. You could also buy it from that site, but it'll cost you most. Honestly, it looks like a really easy swap that you could do yourself.

It needs to be the same part number. Serial numbers will always be different.

Well, did you scan the ECU (engine control unit) for DTCs (diagnostic trouble codes)? That would tell you why you have the check engine light on. Then you can see what needs to be fixed. Changing the ECU may not fix the check engine light especially if you can still drive the car.

scanner shows both oxygen sensors are bad and the mechanic already replaced them twice with denso sensors but the scanner still shows bad sensors, then he took ecu apart and there we could see signs of a short at some point, I wonder what caused it.
so the check engine light wont go away because it keeps reading bad oxygen sensors even if they are brand new.

Thanks a lot. I'll look for the part number on that site and hopefully I can buy it from ebay.

What was the DTC (diagnostic trouble code)??
Sometimes it is a circuit code. Doesn't mean the O2 sensors are bad but something wrong with the wiring.
If it is the wiring then replacing the O2 sensors will not fix the check engine light.
This not to say that the ECU isn't bad. Just would make absolutely sure a new ECU will fix it.
