Hi-

I just had my 2014 CR-V worked on by the dealer. I originally had it in to replace the VTC actuator, because the car was making a grinding on starting it. Read all over that was usually the cause. So, I had the dealer replace it. When it was in the shop, they called and said the chain tensioner needed replacing as well. As that was only $80, I gave the go-ahead. I got another call later saying the timing chain needed replacing and quoted over $1,100. The car has 66k miles. I declined, couldn't afford it. They buttoned it up and I picked it up. When I picked it up, 4 idiot lights were blazing away. I called and they said, until the TC was replaced, I'd get the idiot lights.

I went in, talked to the service manager. He eventually said he'd contact his local rep to see if Honda would help me out, as 66k was a little young to be needing a new TC. A couple of days later, he called, and said Honda was going to pay 90% of the repairs, so I said go ahead.

When I picked the car up, it ran fine, but the more I drove it, the more I noticed the bad gas mileage. I'm no struggling to even get 18mpg in the city, where as before, it hovered bet. 20-22mpg. Haven't driven it on the freeway yet.

So, long story, and there are some suspicious aspects to it that I won't go into here, but would a new TC affect the gas mileage??

 

normally a new timing chain does not effect the milage of any vehicle, unless the timing itself has been adjusted. retarded timing will cause a warmer engine temp, more fuel burn, sluggish running ( lost of pep ) advanced timiing would give you more pep in the engine, better fuel milage, too advance will cause engine knock due to spark too far in advance. have you checked to see if your air filter is clean, tire pressures up to what it should be,

 

Well, stupid me. I didn't get any low tire idiot lights, so I didn't even think to check. Went out this am, and all of the tires were critically low. One was so low it wouldn't register on the gauge. Mileage seems to be back up where it should be, altho I haven't driven the car a whole lot.

Thanks. Altho I'm still getting crappy mpg. Still haven't been able to crack 22mpg, even with a mix of city/highway driving. I'm driving slower than I ever have, too. lol

 

have your timing checked, tire pressures at 36, clean intake system, mobil1 05-20w sae oil, exhaust system clean. clean fuel system, how any miles does the good used engine have. all are suggestions to get milage back up to 22mpg.

 

Interesting because my '98 was getting 17-18 mpg before I changed the timing belt and now I'm getting 22-24mpg. No change in driving habits, tire pressures and etc.

 

welcome to the forum. when your timing belt was changed, the tech checked the timing and got it per specs, allowing the engine to run at its efficient.

 

For $900 I certainly hope so.
