I just brought my 2018 CR-V in for an oil change after getting a maintenance alert on my screen for Code A 1 7. They later recommended that I replace both the Micron cabin filter for $79.95 and the Air filter condition? (Engine Air Filter) for $69.95. The car has 22,945 miles on it. Thinking about things a bit more I had detected an odor in the car recently so I purchased some air fresheners that slide into the A/C vents to correct a musty smell that I thought was caused by all the summer humidity we get down here in SC.
Does their recommendations to replace these filter make make sense due to my car’s age and mileage?
Does it make any sense to try replacing either of these by myself?
welcome to the forum. Replace them yourself, you can google or you tube to find out how to change these filters. one of the few things we can still change our selves. the cabin filter is behind the glove box.
Buying them yourself will cost you about half as much as they are charging
But, you will have to put them in yourself.
It is not difficult. Just takes a little time and effort.
As to whether change them or not, would consult the maintenance schedule in the owner's manual.
As to the odor in the vents from AC, if you have secure place then park the car with windows open and spray Lysol or similar into vents
Do a good heavy spray and let it air out over night (reason for secure place)
In the morning turn vent air on and vent out remaining cleanser for five minutes.
Then next time you use the AC be sure to let the vent air run with the AC off for a few minutes to give it a chance to dry a little
Might be good idea to check if the drain hose is clear
I replaced both filters after buying replacement ones from O’Reilly for about $44 total. The cabin filter install was vey simple once I watched the YouTube video a few times. However I snapped off one the engine air filter casing screws while tightening with a socket wrench. These screws were very hard to loosen with a screwdriver even after spraying them with WD-40 so I had to use a socket wrench to finally get them loose. I must have used too much torque retightening one of them and it snapped off. I made a temp repair for now using another screw and some electric tape and the housing feels pretty tight. Looked online for a replacement screw but the results are a bit mixed. I found what I think is a replacement on a Honda parts site but they want $16 to ship a few screws that cost a little over a dollar.
