Default Stolen CR-V, why"?

Hey, just curious, but recently my 1999 Honda CR-V was stolen in the Chicagoland area.
It was found and towed a day later in a different neighborhood
Just picked it up from the impound lot.
A couple of things are perplexing:
- the car is totally fine engine-wise and ignition wise. there's absolutely no damage to the engine, muffler, catalytic converter, steering column, etc. I am 100% sure the car was locked, and I didn't have a key in the car. How the heck did they make off with it?
- The only thing that is missing is the top external panel above the back door glass lift, and my middle brakelight that sits inside the car is also gone... why??

Literally everything else from the stuff I left in the car, to where I left it in the car, appears to be totally untouched.
I was wondering if anyone had any theories as to why the car would look virtually untouched, and why they would only steal the middle taillight off the back glass.

welcome to the forum. people steal cars to do the following, replace the bad part in their car, to sell parts, to get parts to give to a friend who has bad or broken parts. joy ride to show off to friends. I've had a 64 impala stolen and returned with no interior, a radio out of a 02 civic, a radio out of 5 day old nissan truck, flash light out of my fit.
all cars locked. also parts car is worth a lot more than a whole car.

Does the 1999 CRV have a transponder ignition? You simply cannot start a car equipped like that without the key, so they must have towed it or flatbedded it. And they wanted the parts they took.
