Default VTC (Variable Timing Control Actuator

Ugh, I love my 2016 CRV EXL, but it's been making a slight rumbling noise. I took it to the dealer and they are telling me that it is the VTC Actuator and will be $2,100 to fix. What's more, is they are saying there "could" be something wrong with the timing chain, but won't know until they pull out/fix the VTC Actuator. They say there is a "10%" chance there could be a deeper issue with the chain and if there is, it could be several thousands more, mainly labor, to fix that as well. The CRV has been great and still only has close to 90,000 miles on it. I guess I'm stuck as everything else seems in good working order.

Any thoughts from anyone about issues with VTC Actuators? I assume it's worth getting this car fixed; i doubt i'll be able to find another 2016 with 90,000 miles on it, though it looks like i'll be having to do these repairs.

Default Gen 4 VTC

This thread has tons of discussion on the subject.

Additionally, consider a Honda shop rather than a list price stealership.

My 2016 crv with 57,320 miles makes a rattling noise on a cold start under 32°. I received the same line of bs from a dealer near me. I’m debating having it fixed by an independent shop or wait until it warms up and selling it on to someone who believes all Honda are reliable. If the damn cvt didn’t shudder, I would probably opt to fix it. Don’t get me started on the cup holders!!!

This is likely my last Honda car.

I have owned the following trouble-free vehicles:
1997 crv - sold with 152,000 miles
1999 gold wing - sold with 112,000 miles
2005 gold wing - still in my stable with 97,786 miles
2007 crv - sold to my son who is up to 263,000 miles

Thank you for your quick response. It hasn’t set any codes, which kinda surprises me based on my research to date.

In all honesty, I’m just frustrated because I truly love Hondas. I almost died of shame several weeks ago, when the valet at a hotel brought my car up and commented on the noise!

No codes. What they scanning it with? Let's see your receipt.

I plan to stop at autozone today and ask them to check for codes. Would the check engine light be on if a code was set?
