I would like to buy a car that I can keep for at least 15 years. Our last Honda car was 1999 Accord that we kept for about 14 years without giving us much trouble. Excellent car! We sold it because of lack of ABS, airbags, and cage safety.
I am currently looking at 2015-2017 (expending search to 2013-2017) Accord V6 with manual but these are hard to find!
My criteria:
- 5 star safety rating
- Midisize
- Sedan or Coupe
- Non turbo engine
- Dependable
- Low repair maintenance cost
- Manual transmission
- V6
Any thoughts or recommendations for different cars to consider would be welcome!
welcome to the forum. it appears that honda accord will not have a 6 cyl looking at 2019. only vehicles i see with a 6 is Subaru legacy or the hotrod wrx, Toyota Camery xle/xse, Ford Fusion sport awd. if you find a good car with a 6 cyl, we'd like to know about it.
Thank you! Even for the 2018 model year Accord all engines seems to be with turbo which is not an option at this time. I believe that adding turbo makes the car less reliable and costly (repair turbo related issues).
There does not seem to be much difference between 2013-2017 mode years other than some electronic gadgets. Is that correct? Are engines the same?
if you go to NHTSA, or cars.com site, you can enter the year car info and get all the recalls, also some of the many complaints on that vehicle. good reading, and info to know about which accord you might want to get. most accord engines are good and last a long time, if you check on the 2014/2015 engines, during a certain time the engines did have problems and what the solution was. Any vehicle that comes stock from the factory with a turbo does not necessarly mean it will be costly or unreliable. if cared for per service manual and driven properly, it will last a long time. must make sure you use the proper oil, allow the engine to cool down after a long hard run ( people with turbo's don't know to cool the turbo down, and the oil cakes in the turbo eventually causing a shaft failure) cool the engine down if you drive the freeway or a mountain climb to go skiing, idle for 5-10 min then shut down. turbo failure is rare unless you cook it,
Thank you! That is very helpful. I will read up the complaints.
After reading your comment about 5-10 min cool down period I am even more determined to never ever get a turbo engine and especially a used one. I imagine the the previous owner or someone else within my family forgetting to idle for 5-10 minutes and putting wear on the turbo.
It is interesting to see how the cost of cars and repairs went up over the past two decades flood of automatic tranny, later CVTs, now we are happy with turbo engines. It is all good for the manufacturers and dealerships but bad for consumers. Our 1999 Accord LX was a fine car....I miss these simple cars.
I expended the model years down to 2007....What do I see?
- Large number or spike of complaints with intro of model years (2008, 2013, 2018). That confirms, never buy these cars!
- Overall quality of cars is improving, which is great!
