Hey,

I have a 98 Honda CRV that I love to death (I am afraid death is near) and I got one cylinder that completely failed the compression test. I am handy but have never pulled apart an engine. I feel as though I could if I knew what I was looking for. Also I am tight on money (as we all are). What are the possible issues? I was told probably a valve issue. I want to fix it myself but I need a little guidance.

welcome to the forum. besure to have a factory service manual so you have all the correct parts and torque. No compression can be rings, valves, if rings you can hear and feel air from your add oil cover. if valves you can hear it in your intake or exhaust. also you can view u-tube and see if they have any type of honda engine being overhauled. Your size engine.

Thanks for the start. I will remove the oil add cover and feel for air. What exactly am I listening for in my intake/exhaust? Also where is it best place to listen for that? I will go do a full check on my day off tomorrow and see what else I can tell you about the situation. I have a Haynes manual on it's way in the mail.

I removed the cover and there was a lot of air coming out. It sounded almost like a sub woofer. Do you think that means it the piston?

 

possible rings worn. would be a lot of air blowing out the oil add vent. if you pull the airfilter and listen at the intake and it it is leaking, it would give you a chug type of sound and same if you listen to the exhaust pipe. If you can put just compressed air into the bad cylinder, it would be easier to hear where the leak is coming from. with the piston up at the compression stroke of that cylinder. listen to all 3 sections at one time.
