our 1997 CRV still has the original brakes, 80k kms
the dealership says at 4mm the pads need to be replaced and the rotors machined to make sure the new pads bed down okay.
does this sound right to you folks?

sure but i would not pay dealer prices you could buy performance pads and brand new rotors for what they are going to charge you. do some online research on local shops find one reliable and have them do it don't waste money with a dealer better yet do it yourself for free its one of the easiest things to do on a car.

do the rotors usually need resurfacing?

 

its always good practice to plain rotors when you purchase new pads to get optimum braking performance but most people don't and not technically necessary. i never did mine i just got new rotors every other set of new pads because rotors are dirt cheap they cost less money then my pads but i do my own work.

lowlife9 is correct! Don't waste money on turning the rotors, they often warp soon after because they are thinner after they are turned. If your brake pedal pulses up and down when braking, your rotors are warped. Replace them. If not and they look reasonably shiny, just replace the pads. Dealers and shops charge piles of money for brake jobs. I have heard people say how happy they were to pay only $300 for a front brake job. The parts often cost less than $60 for pads and rotors and the job takes about 30 mins. Not a bad profit margin. I'm sure there are videos available on line to show you how to do it yourself. Any special tools are cheap. Good luck.
