Default Need top dead center help!

Just installed a new head on a 1991 Honda Accord EX. Last step is to adjust the lash on the rocker arms but 1st I need to get the set the engine to TDC. I read the manual but I noticed more than 1 mark on the timing gear, the one that appears in the timing window. There is a red mark and a few more that I see when I turn the engine, which line do I use. I tried a couple different marks thinking I was one #1 but when I turn the engine 180# I end up with the rotor facing #2 spark plug connection. should be facing #3. Can I get some advise on finding TDC?

Take the spark plug outta the number one piston hole and shine a flashlight down in the hole and turn the crankshaft until the piston travels to the top of the cylinder. Thats how I have always done it and never had a problem.

how would one know if it is on the compresion stroke or the exhaust stroke by looking at the piston with the spark plug out?

To the best of my knowledge when the piston is at TDC both valves are closed for the ignition fire and when the piston travels down the exhaust valve is open and when the piston travels up the intake valve is open. I dont know if this is entirely true but I believe this is the way that it works.
