Just got a 97 civic for a commuter car. Not sure of cars history, how do I know what motor is in it? It may have been swapped.

there should be identifiable marking on the engine that will tell you what it is.

Welcome to the forum,Look for a small, square pad cast into the engine block, near the exhaust manifold where the transmission bolts to the engine. It will have two series of numbers stamped in it. The top group of numbers has five digits. This is the engine number. The D16Y7 came in DX,LX and CX models, the HX had the D16Y5 engine and the EX came with the D16Y8 motor.
