I'm finishing up a ground up restoration of a 1986 Civic CRX Si and I'm trying to find out what type of paint was applied at the factory. The vehicle was made in Japan, the paint code is NH-80M (Blackburn - metallic black w/ a clear coat) and it has a grey primer.

I just need to know if the paint type was a lacquer, enamel or urethane.

I've contacted dealerships, paint suppliers and Corporate Honda of America without success.

 

if its an 86 i would say its got to be a laquer based paint

 

Any way to verify the paint type?

 

There are some tests but they aren't too acurate so I wouldn't bother but Honda in the mid 80's were almost always laquer based.

 

86 model has a lacquer paint.this is what i know but you can ask some other experts too.

 

i am 100% sure it is laquer based paint.. my friend has a 87 crx and we were doing some body work.. while te clear was off i did a laquer paint smudge test.. and again jennifer and fast work no rudeness intended at all but he said he contacted a lot of people and had no luck.

 

Powder coat maybe.
