Default Timing belt trouble

Hi-

I don't know a whole lot ablout cars, so I was hoping someone here could help me out. We have a 93 Civic( 1.5 L/5speed w/160k)which just died while driving down the highway. We were told that it was most likely the timing belt which went out. We are also told that the damage is most likely severe, and we could need a whole new engine. Is this the case? What would it take to get her running again?

Thank you so much for any input you have!

Terri

Default RE: Timing belt trouble

welcome to the forum and enjoy your stay. Take your timing belt cover off first and see if the belt is snapped or may have jumped a groove. then you can do a compression check to see if you still have any valve damage or possible valve into piston damage. If you have compression on all 4 cylinders then you may have not damaged the engine. Best to get a chilton or hanes repair manual, local library has them, for information on your car. Also you can go to autozone.com and register for free and go to repair and engine, timing belt, it has diagrams and instructions to changing the belt or any other repair you may need to do.
